Touring Traditions are exhibitions and performances that can be booked through Texas Folklife and brought to your community's school, church or other venue. Part of Texas Folklife's goal is to bring the traditional arts to communities throughout Texas.
Apprenticeship Program
The Apprenticeship Program connects master artists to skilled apprentices who receive training in a traditional art form. Teaching an apprentice gives the master artist the opportunity to refine his craft and gives the apprentice a chance to learn an art form that they, in turn, can teach others. Apprenticeships breathe life into the traditional arts and foster the continuation of that art form.
Community Residency Program
Traditions often begin - and continue - in small communities.
The Community Residency Program places master musicians and traditional artists in small Texas communities specifically for the purpose of exploring and continuing the tradition in that community.
School Programs
The Powwow in the Schools Program brings Native American culture to the public schools and builds awareness and understanding of one of Texas’ most significant minority communities. Powwow in the Schools is a program where Native American master artists and craftspeople visit classrooms to present their expertise to school children.
The Folk Arts in Education Program infuses school curriculum with the traditional arts. During the month of June, staff from Texas Folklife and Communities in Schools worked with 19 third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students in the Sims Elementary School’s summer program. Over the course of three one-week sessions, small groups of students explored the traditions that are important to them in their families and community.
