"Prickly" was created especially for Texas Folklife by Texas native and internationally-known artist, Judy Jensen. We have only five of these exquisitely hand painted prints for sale--so reserve yours today! Jensen, best known for her reinvention of reverse painting on glass, exhibits widely. Her numerous solo shows include New York's Heller Gallery, the Galveston Arts Center and The Houston Center for Contemporary Crafts. Jensen's group exhibitions include the Gerald Peters Gallery in New York, Atlanta’s High Museum, the New Delhi Biennale and The Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Japan, among many others. Jensen is represented in numerous public and private collections including the Royal Ontario Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Black and White, hand pulled lithographs created by Jiménez at Flatbed Press in Austin, Texas in 2006. Jiménez signed the artist’s proof, but died before his scheduled return to Flatbed to sign the finished prints. The numbered prints are stamped “Estate of Luis Jiménez” in the lower right corner. Half of our 30 prints have been sold to collectors and museums. We are offering only two of our prints at this special holiday member price.
Luis Jiménez was a world-renowned artist and El Paso native. Just before his tragic death in 2006, Jiménez created La Voz de la Frontera, a limited-edition lithograph, for Texas Folklife to sell as a fundraiser for our Border Radio series. He told us how he used to listen to the border blaster stations very late at night as a young artist working in his studio. In this densely drawn composition, ghostly performers and preachers float in a night sky crackling with electricity, and the screaming head of Wolfman Jack grabs center stage. A radio tower looming over the landscape refers to those mega-watt broadcasts and suggests a Tower of Babel – an apt metaphor for the wildly diverse sounds emanating from beyond the border.

The Big Squeeze is a wild ride into the heart of Texas music, where we find young musicians carrying on a passionate musical legacy fueled by family, friends and food. We follow as they do battle at the final statewide throwdown held at the Accordion Kings & Queens festival in Houston. Also caught on film are several of the festival’s featured performers including Zydeco great Chubby Carrier, Tejano star Mingo Saldivar and Country Western singer/songwriter Ginny Mac. The Big Squeeze is now in national broadcast on PBS stations throughout the United States.
