During the month of June, staff from Texas Folklife Resources and Communities in Schools worked with 19 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in the Sims Elementary School’s summer program. Over the course of three, one-week sessions, small groups of students explored the traditions that are important to them in their families and community.

Students were introduced to characteristics of Folklife and the concept that certain everyday activities and objects hold personal significance within every culture. Storyteller Carla Nickerson used songs and instruments from West Africa to engage the students in a variety of musical traditions, emphasizing the universal qualities of music, song, and dance.

Folklorists Linda Ho and Brenda Sendejo led activities to learn about characteristics of Folklife and to hone the students interviewing skills. Each was given a camera to document the customs that are an important part of their own families’ histories. They interviewed family members and photographed the people and things that hold meaning in their lives: family and friends, pets, personal objects and heirlooms. They then wrote up their observations and family stories, and collaged their photos.
