Texas Dance Hall Preservation, Inc. and Texas Folklife announce their partnership to produce the Texas Polka Festival & Symposium to be held in Schulenburg on February 22, 2014.  With support from a Humanities Texas grant, the event will feature the state’s European polka traditions of German, Czech and Polish heritage.  The Festival & Symposium will be held at the historic Sengelmann Hall in Schulenburg and will feature esteemed Texas polka musicians and exhibits and discussions on European history, dance hall architecture, food, music and dance in Texas. 

WHEN: Saturday, February 22, 2014,  9:00 AM to 10:30 PM

WHERE: Sengelmann Hall, 531 N. Main Street, Schulenburg, TX

The symposium portion of the program will be held downstairs at Sengelmann Hall and Restaurant (food available for purchase) and is free and open to the public.  Symposium schedule is as follows:

9:00 AM – Coffee & Kolache: welcome

10:00 AM – Texas Dance Hall History & Architecture by Stephen Dean, co-founder of TDHP, and architect David Bucek 

11:00 AM – Czech and German Food traditions presented by Dawn Orsak and Lori Najvar of PolkaWorks

1:00 PM – Polka Music History by Dr. John Novak, Frances Barton and Theresa Parker

3:00 PM – Folk and social polka dancing in Texas by Rachel Murray, Thomas Salas and Valina Polka

4:00 PM – Sustaining polka music in Texas by Danny Zapletal, Frank Motley, and Dr. Dan Margolies

The music portion of the festival will be held upstairs at Sengelmann Hall.  Admission is $15 and presale tickets can be purchased at Outhouse Tickets [5].  Music schedule is as follows:

11:30 AM – Boerne Village Band

1:30 PM – Czech Melody Masters

3:30 PM – Brian Marshall and the Slavic Playboys

5:30 PM – Big Squeeze Accordion Showcase

7:00 PM – Santiago Jimenez Jr.

9:00 PM – Mark Halata & Texavia
