The Austin Belly Dance Convention (ABDC): Central Texas’ Premier Middle Eastern Dance Event Enters Its 2nd Decade
The ABDC’s continues in a twenty year tradition. It brings together dancers, musicians, vendors, and audiences from all over the world to Austin in order to celebrate the art of Middle Eastern dance.
Taking over the ABDC in 2014, co-producers Laura (Amara) Osweiler and Tatianna Smith have worked diligently to increase the public’s awareness of Middle Eastern culture. They have also focused on developing a financially sustainable heritage festival. This year, they have a new partnership with the non-profit organization, Texas Folklife. Amara Dances presents the Austin Belly Dance Convention (ABDC) June 24-26, 2016 at Holiday Inn Midtown, 6000 Middle Fiskville Road, Austin, TX 78752.
Featuring international dance stars Sharon Kihara and Sa'diyya, and Master percussionist Ozzy! Guest stars include Amara, America Tru, Anaheed, Bahaia, Cyndi Cyreigna Elliott, Djahari Clark, Draconis, Elsanne Barrows, Hannah Romanowsky, Hannah and Rosanna Setu, Jamie Lynn, Lebanese Simon, Lily, Mahin, Michelle Sorensen, Stacey Lizette, Tamra Henna, and Zymirrah!
Workshops and lectures are Friday 1:00-6:00pm, Saturday 8:30am-6:00pm, and Sunday 8:30am-3:00pm. Workshops pricing varies from $40-$80. Friday and Saturday evening gala shows at 7:00pm are $20. The ABDC Showcases and entry to all vendors Saturday (1:00-5:00pm) and Sunday afternoon (1:00-3:00pm) are free. Two Live Music Shows feature Badrawn (Sat. night) and Atlas Maior (Sat. afternoon). Entry to vendors during convention hours. Film showing, Cecilia and Chad Rinn of Full Tilt Boogie presents “BELLY... Sensual…Scarred…Sacred - The Documentary," on Friday at 10:00pm is free.
The ABDC’s over 30 workshops and presentations offer a wide variety of topics and styles that will satisfy any novice and professional’s interest in dance, music, and health. Enjoy two spectacular evening performances include, Friday evening's "Keep Austin Shimmying" Gala and Saturday evening's "Austin Raqs" Gala, featuring world renowned performers, as well as Austin’s own internationally known dancers and musicians. Stay Friday evening and enjoy a visually stunning film taking an intimate peek into the personal lives of several belly-dancers. Do not miss the free entry into shopping and performances during the ABDC Showcase on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The ABDC hosts a number of local and traveling vendors that supply everything from music to handmade jewelry to imported professional costumes made in Egypt and Turkey.
